Christian publishers giving secular business run for the money

There is no lack - or is there? It depends on what brand of doctrine you adhere to I suppose. You could be lamenting dryness or parched growth in your christian publishing business or instead enjoying the obvious runaway success of certain authors in some quarters.
What can’t be denied is that recently some publishers are certainly tapping into a very lucrative publishing vein indeed. So what’s the secret that all of us ‘lesser publishing mortals’ can glean from?
According to a recent study published by Bloomberg, secular publishers are certainly sitting up and taking notice of Christian publishing success stories. And no wonder. When a book like Rick Warren’s ‘Purpose Driven Life’ blazes a path to over 25 million sales in under 4 years then it’s no surprise major houses start to mosey on over for a closer look at this ‘rinky dink’ market - only these days it’s not so dinky anymore.
With almost half the USA population alone purporting some form of Christianity as their faith (according to latest U.S. Census Bureau stats), that’s a pretty big market to sell to.
Of course that doesn’t even take thought of Europe or the burgeoning Latino and new African Church growth explosions. Let’s face it, these emerging markets all need access to well produced christian materials and it shouldn’t surprise us when previously ‘unknown’ markets suddenly start knocking at our doors to order from us. The question is - are we ready to service them with well produced, reasonably priced books delivered in a heartbeat to anywhere in the world?
The logistics of posting Globally is certainly an issue but some help seems to be waiting in the wings with the following innovative thinking and tools.
1. POD - Print on Demand: No longer the preserve of wayward self publishing cranks, this is fast becoming an increasingly sophisticated way to slay three Goliaths with one stone; a) Low/nil stock levels. With ‘just in time print services’ the POD printer holds only electronic copies of titles and is often able to turn them around within 48 hours, direct to customer. Result? Fresh product, no expensive stock gathering dust on shelves.
b) Shock of shocks - no expensive warehouse to maintain! (Or expensive staff for that matter.) Some POD printers not only post the finished book direct to the customers but they also handle returns and cutsomer complaints as well.
Sheesh - with that load of our minds we could maybe even get round to doing what’s important - finding new authors and marketing all our titles to start competing with the likes of Rick Warren etc.
c) Cashflow freed up - with POD (of course some companies terms and conditions are better than others) essentially you pay for the production of each book only AFTER it’s been sold. Therefore if your margins are okay, then cashflow must increase accordingly.
2. The second innovation which can help Christian publishers is around us all. OFFSHORING. Yep, unless you’re blind you can’t fail to have noticed what’s happening with China and India, not mention Brazil, and countries in Eastern Europe.
With China now the fourth largest economy in the world, according to various sources at least 5,000,000 graduates pass out of China’s Universities every year. Here’s the most important aspect though for those wishing to offshore/outsource their print needs - conservative estimates place up to as many as 500,000 of these graduates per annum as being English speaking!
In simple terms it’s now likely to be easier for you to find an English speaking print partner for your publishing company in China. This kind of thinking was almost inconceivable even 7 years ago and they aim to try and overtake India as outsource
In India figures are perhaps more impressive still. India produces over 2,000,000 English speaking graduates annually and 460,000 of them are IT graduates. (Source: The Economic Times Jan 24th 2005)
Just think, you’ve got the world leader in outsourcing available at the click of a mouse. So why not use them? Simply mosey on over to a likely candidate’s website, then pick up the phone to a possible print partner because they now speak English.
Here’s just a little insight into the money your business could save - In India, the equivalent salary for a $100,000 (£53,700) Wall Street analyst would be about £16,100. Now of course not publishing, but a useful rule of thumb, nonetheless. (Source: Scotsman article “Exodus of City jobs to India to top 15,000 by 2010″)
Some Christian organisations have already taken the step. Operation Mobilization is the first that springs to mind with a publishing house producing work for all of India out of Andhra Pradesh (www.ombooks.org) but there’s no reason why others shouldn’t follow suit in this great land.
Okay, that’s all for today but I’ll return to these important topics again in future, with perhaps some key players and useful resources those interested may be able to utilise.
What is certain is that with today’s technology almost anything is possible, and global boundaries are a thing of the past when it comes to doing business. If Christian Publishers take advantage of these burgeoning opportunities then there is no reason at all why they shouldn’t give secular publishers a real run for their money. I have meditated upon the word of God for the last 20 years on regular basis and completed the Bible in one year.
Every year when I came to the verse Mathew 24: 28 I used to think about this prophetic statement spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ while giving the end-time signs to the disciples.I have tried to get the meaninig of this statement in many ways. But I didn’t get the correct meaning. One suddenly I got the revelation about this statement and prepared a book in Telugu and it released on 14th April, 2009.The response is overhelming.
Some copies are there in Telugu. The Telugu title is ” anthyadhinamulu @ mruthasamudramu ” ( End-Times @ Deadsea ).
So I wish to bring this revelation to Christian community worldwide and english speaking people in India.

I’ve just finished writing a book entitled: Journey of hope, faith & perseverance (The story of Beautiful Gate Zambia) . The book is about how my wife and I commenced on a journey from Cape Town to Zambia by train, armed with nothing but our faith, to begin our work with AIDS orphans in our impoverished country.
